Martin Luther King Jr Tribute - World Stage Theatre

Martin Luther King Jr. named after his father, Martin Luther King Sr. His mothers name was Alberta Williams King. Dr. King had two siblings. One of his siblings, Christine King is still with us today at the age of 95. • Dr. King married Coretta Scott in 1953. She gave birth to four children (Martin Luther King III, Yolanda, Bernice, and Dexter). • Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15, 1929. He was a preacher, founded Southern Christian Leadership Conference and came to prominence when he lead the very successful Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-1956). • In 1963, during the March On Washington, Dr. King delivered his famous I Have A Dream speech (August 28, 1963). The following year he was the youngest man (age 38) to receive the Nobel Peace Prize (1964), and played a huge role in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. On April 3, 1968, Dr. King delivered his speech, I’ve Been to the Mountaintop. The following day he was assassinated. Soon after, a campaign for a holiday in his honor began. It wasn’t until January 20, 1986 that dream became a reality. • Thirty-eight years ago in Portland, Oregon, Ken Berry, the World Arts Foundation and other community members started the annual Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Tribute to keep the dream alive and educate the generation. • For the past seventeen years, in an effort to educate and uplift, World Stage Theatre celebrates Dr. King and other African Americans past, present and future through Who I Am Celebrating Me (February 23-26, 2023). • Our tribute. #mlkday #martinlutherkingjr #worldstagetheatre #worldstage • Video & Audio by Isaiah Sims Narrated By Elijah Sims Images by Shawnte Sims.
